RouteScience Debuts Intelligent Routing Solution For VPNs

RouteScience

PathControl, which is installed at edge routers, routes traffic based on performance and ISP cost/usage metrics.

Andy Gottelieb, vice president of marketing for RouteScience, said using PathControl in conjunction with VPNs would speed the transition of customers from private connections to Internet connectivity.

"Before it was about scale, now it's about cost, but people don't want to give up good performance," said Gottelieb. "With PathControl those using VPNs don't have to give up better performance, and they get this performance at a lower cost vs. private connections."

According to a study by research firm IDC, in 2001 more than 70 percent of large enterprises used VPNs. Most of these companies do not use VPNs for high-availability connectivity, however, said Gottelieb, which is something RouteScience aims to change.

"I think what [companies want is the ability to use the low-cost VPN solution for important traffic, but until now there hasn't really been a solution to guarantee performance riding over the Internet," he said.

With international connections, companies stand to save 60 percent to 90 percent using VPNs vs. private lines, Gottelieb said.

This month RouteScience signed its first service provider customer/partner, Origix, a metro optical network provider. RouteScience plans to introduce a partner program for service providers later this year.
