IBM Software Gets Acquisitive - Again

Green Pasture's software provides real-time document management capabilities and eases the creation of financial documents and annual reports, product documentation and pharmaceutical submissions, IBM said in a statement. Green Pastures is privately held and terms were not disclosed.

This is IBM Software's Data Management group's fourth acquisition in less than two years and bolsters content management acquisitions of Tarian in 2002 and Aptrix last year. IBM Software itself kicked off its spree with the purchase of Informix, and its eponymous database, in 2001, CrossWorlds, an EAI player, and CrossAccess, a maker of mainframe access software two months ago. The software group has acquired 13 companies since 2001.

IBM Software is clearly bulking up its content management franchise, lead by DB2 Content Manager. Content and document management are hot areas with many companies piecing together Information Lifecyle Management (ILM) strategies are looking at software acquisitions to fill out their portfolios. EMC earlier this year bought Documentum and OpenText bought IXOS.

"The addition of Green Pasture technology and its expertise in managing complex documents, combined with IBM's comprehensive enterprise content management offerings, brings more value to customers, helping them gain a faster return on their information assets," Janet Perna, general manager Data Management for IBM Software said in a statement.
