AMD To Ship Low-Power Opterons

The move comes as rival Intel's semi-annual developer conference is set to begin.

AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., said its Opteron HE processors will run at 55 watts, and its EE versions will run at 30 watts for both servers and workstations. The new processors will ship next month, AMD said.

When they ship, pricing will be set at $1,514 for the Opteron 846 HE and 840 EE; models 246 HE and 240 EE will be priced at $851; and models 146 HE and 140 EE will be priced at $733.

All prices are based on $1,000-unit quantities, AMD said.

The Intel Developer Forum, held in San Francisco, is to run from Tuesday through Thursday and include several new product and technology announcements by the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant.
