IBM Adds Two New Database Tools To Aid Self-Healing

DB2 Recovery Expert promises simpler automated recovery, diagnostic and self-management talents. The tool will be available for DB2 on Windows, HP-UX, Solaris, AIX and Linux by the end of September, IBM said.

DB2 Performance Expert consolidates, reports, analyzes and recommends SMART changes on DB2 performance information, IBM said. SMART is IBM's Self Managing And Resource Tuning effort geared at making DB2 databases self-monitoring and self-healing.

Both products are expected to be priced at $8,000 per CPU.

The company also unveiled DB2 Table Editor, which promises fast table access, update and delete functions for DB2, and Informix Dynamic Server. The DB2 Web Query Tool will enable users to access multiple enterprise databases securely and also supports Informix Dynamic Server. These products are expected to be priced at $3,500 per processor and are slated to ship by the end of July.

IBM, which by its own account has poured $200 million into its database tools business in the past two years, faces some new competition as BMC brings database tools formerly available for Oracle over to DB2 (see related story).

All of the major database vendors are working to ease performance monitoring and management of their databases. Oracle is expected to unveil Oracle9i Release 2, with enhanced management capabilities, as early as this week.
