Small Biz Data Is Vulnerable: Survey

Thirty-three percent who have are storing data in ways that leave it vulnerable, according to the Verio survey. Seventy percent of small businesses reported that they would consider a single incident of data loss significant and costly, and 53 percent of respondents said they had actually already lost information stored on a PC. Sixty-four percent said the loss was due to a common event like a hard drive crashing.

Only 9 percent said they are familiar with business continuity and disaster recovery solutions, according to Verio.

"Given the affordability and easy deployment of some of today's PC data backup and recovery solutions, it's surprising that such a large number of small businesses leave their data exposed and at risk," Kiyoshi Maeda, Verio president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. "Many of these businesses continue to learn the difficult lesson that storing customer data, financials and other information on PCs often falls short, and that protecting themselves with an affordable, fully managed solution can be cost-effective, quick to deploy and easy to maintain."

Verio, which hosts and manages services for small and mid-market companies, conducted the survey in July 2006. Verio launched a managed PC Data Backup solution earlier this year.
