TechXNY Becoming Many Shows In One

TechXNY

Formerly known as PC Expo, TechXNY is the centerpiece of New York's "Technology Week," which begins Oct. 3. Last year's trade show drew 20,000 attendees, and organizers say that number could go up by as much as 25 percent this year.

Although they don't release the number of exhibitors, TechXNY officials expect 10 percent more than last year, helped, in part, by the cancellation of Comdex in Las Vegas, which had been scheduled for November.

"I feel that our attendance will be very strong," Christina Condos, show director, said. "There's more interest in the event, and the co-located sites will bring up people that we might not have had."

Companies that were planning to show off new products at Comdex are looking for another venue, and TechXNY's strong press attendance, including trade and general business press, is an attractive alternative, Condos said.

The expos and conferences under the TechXNY umbrella this year include Consumer Electronics Trade Expo, Wireless Workforce, RFID World, Tom's Hardware Expo, OutsourceWorld and BPO Connections. The latter is an invitation-only business strategy and products forum designed for organizations interested in business process outsourcing.

Last year, TechXNY included only OutsourceWorld, so the expanded format makes the show even more worthy of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's "Technology Week" proclamation, issued last week. "We want to be the week of technology in New York, so we're trying to have lots of things going on at once," Condos said.

Other attractions in this year's show includes an opening keynote from Kenneth Cron, interim chief executive of Computer Associates International Inc. and former president of publishing at CMP Media, which owns TechXNY and TechWeb.

Cron took the helm of CA following the resignation of longtime CEO Sanjay Kumar, who was pressured by the board to take the lesser post of chief software architect in April. Kumar left the company this month, saying it would help CA settle government investigations into its accounting practices. The investigation is ongoing.

"CA is a very, very New York company," Condos said. "If you live here, you see a lot on CA, so we think it will be very interesting for our audience."

About 60 percent of TechXNY's attendees are from the New York-New Jersey region.

Among the more interesting exhibits planned for CETEX this year includes a model of a digital home filled with gadgets and technology for more comfortable living. Exhibitors will contribute everything in the home.

In addition, the show will highlight a digital boardroom, demonstrating how audiovisual gear is becoming more a part of information technology than consumer electronics.
