Juniper Rolls Out Routers

The T-series has been shipping since April 2002.

"It's been tested, been proved and is in 60 production networks today," says Dubhe Beinhorn, vice president of Juniper's federal systems group.

Juniper has been selling to federal accounts for more than three years, and the company's T640 routers were selected over Cisco's--its biggest competitor--for the sought-after Global Information Grid Bandwidth Expansion (GIG-BE) contract, which is sponsored by the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency. The project's goal is to use IP technology to link various federal-government agencies over a high-speed optical network. The IP routing portion of the project is worth between $50 million and $100 million during the next few years, according to reports.

The T-Series continues to gain market share in the service-provider core routing market segment, currently holding 39 percent, according to Gartner Group.

"We're trying to get the word out that there is an alternative. Another competitor. It brings diversity to networks and allows VARs to compete more effectively," Beinhorn says.
