Slice of the Channel: Larry Ellison Slams AWS, Amazon and Google Show Strong Cloud Growth, Datto CEO Steps Down

Oracle highlighted its second-generation cloud infrastructure and debuted new applications with AI, machine learning and blockchain during its partner and customer conference in San Francisco, Oracle OpenWorld 2018. Oracle Founder Larry Ellison made news when he slammed Amazon’s AWS Cloud System, alleging major cybersecurity threats because the AWS cloud architecture runs its cloud control code on the same machines as it stores corporate data.

Google's revenue increased 22% in the third quarter driven by healthy performance in its mobile search business, but results were slightly below wall street expectations. CEO Sundar Pichai referenced momentum for Google’s multi-cloud strategy during the earnings call. Google Cloud Platform is included in the "other revenues" category, which rose to $4.64 billion in the quarter, up 29.2 percent from $3.59 billion in the same year-ago period. Growth slowed slightly for Amazon Web Services in the third fiscal quarter, but the tech giant says AWS is more profitable than ever due to more to more-efficient data center operations. And, Microsoft Azure revenue surged 76 percent during the first quarter of fiscal 2019, which ended Sept. 30.

Intel says it expects lower supply on entry-level CPUs and Internet of Things components but won’t say when the shortage could end. The comments came during its third-quarter earnings call, when the company reported solid earnings driven by its PC and data-centric businesses.

Datto Founder Austin McChord is calling it quits as CEO. Tim Weller, Datto's president and chief operating officer, will step in to manage the Norwalk, Conn.-based company's day-to-day operations. McChord, meanwhile, will remain a member of Datto's board of directors and will remain one of the company's major shareholders.
