WATCH: How To Become An Effective Leader

Today’s workplace all comes down to trust.

“There are too many opportunities for talented people to go out and start their own company or to go work at a startup. They don’t necessarily need established companies to find a place to work. Technology is allowing them to do things that they could never do before,” said Joe Bassani, managing partner at consulting firm UTC Partners based in California.

Bassani said trust is now a requirement in creating a winning culture. As a leadership development coach, he’s studied strong leaders for years, both in the U.S. Army and later in the private sector. He concluded that the new workplace requires a trustworthy leader, someone with empathy, competence and authenticity.

“You have to make people want to be there,” he said.

Bassani pointed to leaders like CVS CEO Larry Merlo, who successfully eliminated tobacco sales from all stores to be more in line with its transition to a health-care company.

“He made the really hard decision to eliminate tobacco sales from all CVS stores because it wasn’t in line with the values of the organization,” he said. “That’s really about being authentic. It came with a price: A $2 billion a year business for them that they gave up.”

Bacem Moussa, CEO of Boston-based solution provider TSP, said he agrees with Bassani’s message.

“Part of leadership is picking a strategy and convincing people in the organization to follow it and execute it. But also part of leadership is to adapt, and we have to adapt much, much faster than we did in the past,” Moussa said.

“We have to be humble because the speed of change and with all these opportunities, it’s very easy to make mistakes,” he said.
