CloudWerx Hires Former Google Exec As New CTO

CloudWerx is a Santa Clara, Calif.-based startup that already has more than 200 customers, along with a 100 percent customer retention rate.

This year, CloudWerx has invested heavily into hiring top cloud talent in a move to expand its Google Cloud business.

In April, the company hired former Microsoft director Sidhant Gupta as its new CTO. Gupta left Microsoft as the company’s director of product incubation, tasked with bringing innovative health and life sciences incubations to the market. He spent nearly nine years at Microsoft, including as a strategy adviser helping craft Microsoft’s digital health-care innovation pipeline and strategy.

CloudWerx anticipates strong collaboration between both newly hired executives with planned joint ownership on a number of technical initiatives.

Google Cloud Q2 2023 Earnings, $32 Billion Run Rate

CloudWerx’s hiring of Google Cloud’s Gupta comes as Google Cloud begins its profitability era.

Nearly since its inception, Google Cloud has been operating at a loss. The company has historically generated hundreds of millions of dollars in operating losses every quarter.

For the first time in the company’s history, Google Cloud turned a profit of $191 million during the first quarter of 2023. The second quarter of 2023 proved that the first quarter was not just a fluke.

Google Cloud recently reported operating income of $395 million for second-quarter 2023 compared with an operating loss of $590 million year over year. This means Google Cloud improved its operating income by nearly $1 billion year over year in second-quarter 2023.

With second-quarter 2023 sales reaching over $8 billion, Google Cloud currently has an annual run rate of $32 billion.
