Microsoft 365 Outage Hits Thousands; Company Halts ‘Ongoing Deployment’

Thousands of Microsoft 365 customers are reporting outages today. Microsoft says it “halted an ongoing deployment” of an update today to see if that provides relief.

A Microsoft outage is affecting tens-of-thousands of Microsoft 365 users Monday morning as the software giant says an unspecified “update” has been halted.

“We’ve identified downstream impact for Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business,” said Microsoft in a tweet at around 11:45 a.m. ET.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant said it prevented a “potentially problematic update” from propagating further across the service and is reviewing options to revert the change quickly in those portions of Microsoft’s infrastructure where it has been applied.

“We’ve halted an ongoing deployment and are monitoring services to see if that provides relief to the environment,” said Microsoft at 12:03pm ET oday.

The company did not specify what the system update and “ongoing deployment” were. Microsoft did not immediately respond to CRN’s request for comment on the Microsoft 365 outage reports.

Microsoft Outlook Outage

According to DownDetector, which tracks service outages by reports from multiple sources including users, there were 16,700 Microsoft 365 service outages reported at approximately 11:00 a.m. ET today. That number dropped to about 15,200 by 11:11 a.m.

The vast majority of reports, approximately 85 percent, were regarding issues and outages with Microsoft Outlook.

The remaining problems for Microsoft 365 users today are about server connection and website issues, according to DownDetector.

In terms of outage locations, hot spots where most reports were coming from include regions in Kansas and Ohio, as well as New York and Massachusetts, according to a DownDetector heat map of outage reports.
