WATCH: Three Big Cloud Security Misconceptions Debunked

At iCorps Technologies’ Cybersecurity Summit, executives discuss what customers have gotten wrong about security in the cloud.

Many customers still believe their data isn’t safe in the cloud and that’s completely wrong, said Jeff Lauria, vice president of technology at Boston-based IT consulting company iCorps Technologies.

“Cloud services as a whole are more secure than anything anybody can do on-site. The fact of the matter is that Microsoft, AWS, Google have security professionals working 24/7 to make sure that platform is secure itself. When you’re on-site, who’s doing that?”

Executives from iCorps Technologies, Datto and Sophos discussed the issue of cloud secureity at iCorps’ Cybersecurity Summit in Boston.

“At the end of the day, security of the cloud is up to AWS and Azure and who that cloud provider is. But when you’re putting technology into the cloud, that’s your responsibility, the security of what’s running up there,” said Justin Walker, a sales engineer at Sophos. Walker said many customers still believe that they can rely entirely on the security tools built inside the public cloud.

“So you can have a very secure infrastructure in AWS or Azure, but at the end of the day you might have poor settings, poor server infrastructure that might let attacks through. So, I think it’s important that people have a layered approach just as much there.”
