Sales Of Servers, Notebooks Drop

Research conducted by CRN shows that 35.3 percent of VARs resold custom-built notebooks in November 2004, but only 27.4 percent of them presently resell custom-built notebooks. Adding to this decrease, Dell Direct also has cut into custom-built notebook sales. With both commodity options, businesses are opting to forego control over configuration in order to capture lower prices, and every indication is that this trend will continue.

The percentage of VARs reselling custom-built servers has fallen as well, from 24.7 percent a year ago to 20.7 percent. As opposed to the case of notebooks, this is probably only a temporary decrease. Some VARs attribute this drop in custom-built servers to Intel motherboard shortages, and are unsure as to when it is expected to stabilize.
