Dell Offers Sony TVs
The high-definition LCD televisions are all in the 40-inch to 46-inch range -- a sweet spot for retailers, according to Dell executives. Dell already sells its own branded TVs from 37 inches and below. The company said in a statement issued Thursday that it plans to offer more brands in the future.
"We will soon offer a wide assortment of televisions from leading manufacturers that feature the latest technology and meet Dell's high standards for performance," the company said. "This decision is consistent with our plan of action to focus investments on areas of the consumer business where we can provide the most value and have the highest return for our shareholders."
In an e-mail sent to employees this month, Michael Dell said he planned to introduce new brands and products in the consumer and small-business markets. Dell sent the memo, which also suspended bonuses for all employees because of the company's disappointing financial performance, a couple of days after taking over as CEO from Kevin Rollins, who resigned.
The company has refused to say what other new non-Dell brands it may start selling. The company has sold third-party consumer-electronic brands before, including Sony digital cameras and Lexmark printers.
