Dell Releases Two Servers For SMB Market
The new R300 rack server and T300 tower server are intended to help companies improve handling memory intensive applications by offering 24GB of memory -- three times the memory capacity of competitive one-socket systems. High-availability features include hot-plug hard drives and redundant power supplies to help increase uptime and prevent loss of data access.
Additionally, the R300 helps improve energy cost savings for customers, with what Dell said is the industry's most energy efficient server, delivering the leading performance per watt compared to all currently-published SPECpower results.
According to the Round Rock, Texas-based company, using the quad-core Intel Xeonx5460 processor, the PowerEdge R300 achieves up to 26 percent better performance than the HP DL320 G5p, and up to 51 percent over the IBM System X 3250. The T300 tower server achieves up to 31 percent better performance compared to the HP ML310 G5 server) and up to 51 better performance than the IBM System X 3200.
The PowerEdge R300 rack server starts at $1,249 and the T300 tower server is available at $999 and up.
Bob Skelley, director of Dell's Enterprise Architecture Channel, said that 80 percent of the company's partners sell servers.
Dell has faced criticism that its partner program has not been channel friendly. Last December it launched PartnerDirect , offering new benefits, such as short-term financing and online deal registration.
"We're not perfect on a channel model but have the commitment to do that," said Skelley. "We think that the new servers will be a good fit with channel partners in the SMB space."
