Data center colocation standout Interxion, which was acquired by Digital Realty this year for a massive $8.4 billion, has acquired fellow data center provider Altus IT in a move to establish a presence in Croatia and gain access to more than 100 customers in the region.
“Southeast Europe offers significant economic potential, and the acquisition of Altus IT represents an important step and our first gateway into that market,” said David Ruberg, chief executive of EMEA for Interxion, in a statement.
With the new acquisition, Digital Realty continues its march to greatly expand its data center colocation footprint to meet increasing demand from hyperscalers like AWS, Microsoft and Google, which are spending billions on data centers this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.

In one of the biggest data center acquisitions to date, Digital Realty expanded into the European market with the blockbuster deal for Netherlands-based Interxion earlier this year. The merger of San Francisco-based Digital Realty and Interxion created a leading pan-European data center provider, offering services to approximately 70 percent of the GDP in Europe.
The purchase this week of Zagreb, Croatia-based Altus IT further extends Digital Realty outside North America.
Altus IT is one of the leading carrier-neutral data center providers in the region, offering a gateway for interconnection with several prominent service providers in southeast Europe. Altus IT has more than 100 customers comprised o approximately 50 connectivity providers, including five tier-one carriers and two main internet exchanges, making it one of the most interconnected communities within the region.
“Altus IT‘s business strategy is closely aligned with our connectivity-centric and customer-focused approach,” said Interxion’s Ruberg.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Digital Realty is one of the largest colocation data center providers in the world, owning a portfolio of more than 280 data centers across 22 countries along with over 700 connectivity providers. The data center giant’s PlatformDigital is its flagship data center platform designed to enable customers to scale digital business and navigate digital transformation strategies.
Altus IT’s current CEO, Goran Doreski, will take over the position of managing director for Croatia at Interxion. “We are delighted to enable a global presence for our customers in Croatia and to bring additional value by enhancing the availability and quality of our services,” Đoreski said in a statement.
