DataXoom Amps Up IoT, Mobile Expertise With New Bundle For Transportation Industry

Mobile data service provider DataXoom Wednesday released a new offering aimed at helping the transportation industry comply with an upcoming mandate to have its drivers use electronic logging devices instead of paper logs to record their record of duty status.

The electronic logging device ruling was first published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and will go into effect Dec. 18.

’Our ELD Mobility Bundle includes a mobile device, all necessary mounting hardware, device security, setup and configuration, and arguably one of the most critical components – 4G LTE mobile data – which ultimately ensures the seamless transfer of driver data, electronic records and fleet communications," said DataXoom founder and CEO Chris Hill.

DataXoom's package includes a Samsung Galaxy Tab E device, mounting systems from RAM Mounts, LTE mobile data, device setup and configuration services, and security from MobileIron. DataXoom's biggest opportunities are in midsize fleets, with the number of vehicles ranging from 200 to 3,000, according to Hill.

DataXoom, which provides LTE and 4G data network connectivity for tablets and mobile Wi-Fi hot spots, has been sharpening its focus around the Internet of Things as more devices become connected.

"Our ELD bundle is a perfect example of our IoT strategy … the connectivity is one small piece of it, and we want to make it the easiest part for our customers," said Hill. "When we offer value-add like device management, RAM, accessories and security, these layers of services are important to have on top of the connectivity."

Security is a big piece of the ELD bundle, and DataXoom's partnership with MobileIron enables customers to manage and secure their IoT devices across fleets of vehicles.

’A top-notch EMM [enterprise mobility management] platform promotes data security and fleet management efficiency, and MobileIron is pleased to be included in DataXoom’s ELD Mobility Bundle,’ said Klaus Moser, vice president of Americas channels at MobileIron, in a statement. ’With MobileIron, IT departments can provision, track, lock down, and update devices from a central console, making it simple to secure and scale mobile fleet deployments.’

In the future, Hill said that DataXoom will continue to build up its IoT business, and look to other vertical markets beyond transportation. The Walnut Creek, Calif.-based company's focus in particular is on the bandwidth running over the IoT connection on top devices.

"I see a big channel opportunity around IoT … there's a lot of excitement out there," he said.
