Apple Board Member Says Bye-Bye To Google Board
Levinson, a member of the Google board since 2004 and the Apple board since 2000, will remain on the Apple board.
The resignation comes after Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt stepped aside in August as an Apple board member as the two companies are increasingly competing with one another.
Levinson's departure severs all board ties between the two companies.
Google said earlier this year that it was moving into the exploding smartphone market with its Google Android mobile phone competing head on against Apple's iPhone.
Levinson's departure comes after Schmidt had spoken out in favor of the former Genentech CEO remaining on the Google board despite FTC scrutiny.
In a prepared statement, Schmidt praised Levinson as being a "key part of Google's success these past five years, offering unvarnished advice and vital counsel on every big issue and opportunity Google has faced."
"Though he leaves as a member of our board, Art will always have a special place at Google," added Schmidt.
"Working with Eric, Larry [Page, co-founder and president, products], Sergey [Brin, co-founder and president, technology] and the whole Google team has been a remarkable experience for me," said Levinson in a statement released by Google. "I greatly admire what they've built and have no doubt that Google has a terrific future."
