Best Buy To Sell Amazon Kindle This Fall
Best Buy also becomes the only retailer to carry the Kindle as well as Barnes & Noble's Nook, Sony's Reader and Apple's iPad, which has e-reading capability but much more functionality than the other devices.
"There's no question that e-readers have found their rightful place in today's digital lifestyle," said Chris Homeister, senior vice president and general manager of home entertainment for Best Buy, in a statement. "Our goal is to help people choose the device that's right for them by providing the broadest selection of popular e-readers of any retailer, in one convenient place that enables people to easily see, touch, try and buy."
The Minneapolis-based retailer will start carrying the latest-generation Kindle with built-in Wi-Fi, which retails for $139.99, and a version with free 3G capability that retails for $189.99. Best Buy will add the larger Kindle DX "later in the season," according to the company.
"We are excited that Best Buy will be offering the new generation Kindle to its customers," said Steve Kessel, senior vice president at Amazon Kindle.
Amazon recently refreshed the Kindle to include a new electronic-ink screen with 50 percent better contrast than the previous model. The new version also is 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter, boasts 20 percent faster page turns and up to one month of battery life with wireless turned off and has double the storage to 3,500 books, according to Amazon.
Last month, Amazon said more new generation Kindles were ordered in the first four weeks of availability than any previous model.
