CES 2018: Lenovo And Google Team Up For The World's First Standalone VR Headset

At CES 2018, Lenovo and Google launched the world’s first standalone virtual reality headset.

The Lenovo Mirage Solo lets users run freely inside the virtual world. It uses Lenovo's new WorldSense technology, which allows users to feel like the product's computer-generated simulations are real and lifelike.

’We truly believe we are going to take a bold step forward in terms of making VR (Virtual Reality) ready and available and more mainstream to an audience," said Jeff Meredith, SVP and GM of Consumer Segment at Lenovo.

The companies also debuted the Lenovo VR180 Mirage Camera. It lets users take high-resolution videos and images. Users can then view them in virtual reality when they transfer them to the Mirage Solo headset.

Both devices are enhanced with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and are expected to ship by mid-2018. They'll compete against Facebook's OculusGo, another cordless headset expected to be released later this year.

"It's really exciting for us to see something like this manifest itself outside the smartphone, " said Don McGuire, VP of Global Product Marketing at Qualcomm. "We've literally integrated cameras and camera technology in billions of smartphones over the years, but to see it manifest in something like this is pretty amazing."
