WATCH: Samsung Galaxy Note9’s Best New Features

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note9 is turning heads following its debut at Unpacked 2018. Tech analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy calls it the new “superphone”.

“The good thing for Samsung is the Note9 is more distinguished than the S9 and I think this will compete better with the iPhone X than the S9 did,” said Moorhead.

The phone features a Super AMOLED display. DisplayMate says the display is the best for a smartphone on the market. The other differentiator is the pen: It works like a remote and is programmable.

“What makes this pen different is it’s active,” said Moorhead. “It has Bluetooth technology. You can turn on YouTube videos. You can advance a PowerPoint. You can even take selfies.”

The camera is the same on the S9, which has the second highest rating out there of any camera. Samsung has upgraded the image processing and added a ‘Scene Optimizer’ to automatically recognize and enhance the photo.

After using it for a weekend, Samsung Note9 noticeably snappier and with better battery life. This is compared to my S9+ with cloned apps and services. WiFi connecting higher speeds (780mbps) to my home router which I didn't expect. #Unpacked2018

Storage is huge too: The phone is available in two storage options: 128GB or 512GB. The device is also 1TB ready with the ability to insert a microSD card.

The release comes on the heels of Samsung’s S9/S9+, which launched late in the first quarter, and witnessed slower than normal sales. Samsung claims the slowdown is due to both intensified competition at the high end and an overall sluggish smartphone market. Moorhead believes the new Galaxy Note9 could change that.

“I think there’s enough differentiators to make the difference here and this could be the differentiator for the company, but we are just going to have to see. I’m expecting an Apple event in the next month-and-a-half to really see what we have for the holidays,” said Moorhead.

Meanwhile, a recent survey by IDC shows that Samsung remains the leader in the worldwide smartphone market.
