Verio Offers A 'Fair Share'
Fair share technology separates accounts, giving users access only to their resources on a shared server.
"Our resellers told us they wanted to make sure they were getting the resources they pay for and protect their customers' data from bad code uploaded by another customer on the server," said Steve White, executive director of the SMB reseller channel division at Verio, Denver.
Washington-based Mindshare Internet Campaigns has migrated all of its hosting customers to Verio's service and will adopt the new VPS v2 capabilities, said Mindshare CTO Shabbir Safdar. "In the old version, there was still a possibility that one client's runaway processes could affect other clients," Safdar said. "With this new segregation technology, what one person does on the server does not affect another."
VPS v2 also offers root access technology and compatibility with additional off-the-shelf applications. The root access technology gives hosting providers control over all VPS resources, including access to file systems, configuration files, system libraries, root files and application installations.
"We can now change the underlying system software," Safdar said. "It's like having your own private Unix box with control over the configurations."
The VPS v2 environment is an open architecture built on the Unix platform. "Resellers can load any number of third-party FreeBSD [open-source OS] applications for clients," White said.
