Extreme Networks Targets Convergence With New Switches

Extreme Networks said the new switches and switch modules come as part of its effort to support converged networking environments for voice, video and data.

The Summit X450 fixed Gigabit Ethernet edge switches come in 24- and 48-port versions with PoE support. Optional dual-port 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplinks also are available.

In addition, the switches feature IPv6 routing plus security features such as hardware-based sFlow sampling and policy-based security functions. SFlow is an industry standard for monitoring high-speed switched and routed networks.

Available now, the new X450 switches carry a starting price of $4,995.

Extreme also has released new modules for its BlackDiamond 8800 switch. The modules support Gigabit aggregation, PoE and policy-based encryption. The new BlackDiamond 8800 modules start at $6,995.

All of the new products are based on the Santa Clara, Calif.-based vendor's ExtremeXOS modular operating system, which enables the individual reboot of failed modules or processes without requiring the entire switch to be taken out of service.
