Former 3Com CEO Claflin Resurfaces at Networking Vendor
Claflin joined 3Com in 1998 and led the company from 2001 until his retirement earlier this year. He had also served on 3Com's board. Prior to that, he served as executive vice president of sales and marketing at Digital Equipment Corporation and spent 22 years at IBM.
"Bruce's tenure at 3Com combined with his leadership experience at Digital Equipment Corporation and IBM bring to Ciena an impressive set of skills and solid industry knowledge base that will be invaluable to Ciena as we advance our position in the market," said Gary Smith, president and CEO of Ciena, Linthicum, Md., in a statement.
Ciena, a maker of infrastructure equipment targeted at telcos, cable operators, governments and enterprises, announced the appointment Thursday. The company also reported a narrowed fiscal third-quarter loss of $4.3 million on sales of $152.5 million and announced plans for a one-for-seven reverse split of its common stock, effective September 22.
3Com in January named Scott Murray as Claflin's replacement, a few weeks after Claflin said he planned to retire. Murray departed 3Com earlier this month and was succeeded by Edgar Masri after determining that the time commitment required in China to manage 3Com's joint venture with Huawei Technologies was too great.
