3am Labs Offers Up Remote Management Freebie
Starting Wednesday, VARs or users can download from the company's Web site a base version of LogMeIn desktop remote control software or LogMeInScout, a remote management tool. With LogMeInScout, administrators can define security and use policies and deploy LogMeIn across their network.
Solution providers can then upgrade themselves and their customers to LogMeIn Pro, which adds file and folder synchronization, secure file distribution and remote printing to the mix. That service costs $12.95 per month per desktop, the company said.
Remote control and management capabilities are important for solution providers supporting dispersed customers. Citrix bought ExpertCity for its remote management capabilities last year.
There are some free open-source remote control offerings available, but they are not built with security in mind. Some even send user password information across the wire in clear text, according to a 3am Labs spokesman.
"It sounds like this is priced right," said Lesley Taufer, president of Boulder Corp., a Boulder, Colo.-based solution provider and Citrix partner. Remote management products represent a "two-fer" for such partners who not only resell them but use them themselves, she noted.
