Appliance Detects Slackers

Start-up Cymphonix this week at the TechXNY conference is expanding its portfolio with a new appliance that helps small businesses improve network performance and pinpoint bandwidth usage abuse.

Cymphonix has also forged a partnership with channel development firm Marketlink Technologies to help it recruit and support solution providers.

The vendor's new Bandwidth Composer 200 monitors, manages and reports on bandwidth consumption, showing how much bandwidth individuals and applications are using. It also enables customers to assign priority to critical applications, users or groups and throttle back unwanted usage, such as peer-to-peer traffic.

"You don't have to go desktop to desktop to see what's going on," said Patrick Dunn, vice president of PHD Communications, a solution provider in Manchester, N.H. "IT guys love it because it's going to save them hours and hours looking for who's screwing things up, and money guys love the fact that they can see who's doing what," he said.

With the launch of Bandwidth Composer 200, Cymphonix is extending its line of bandwidth management products to small businesses with between 30 and 150 employees. It is a smaller version of the vendor's Bandwidth Composer 500, which targets midsize businesses.

"Channel partners tell us the current product hits 30 percent of their customer base. They've been asking for a product that hits the lower end," said Kevin Santiago, CEO of Cymphonix, Salt Lake City.

The company is also launching Bandwidth Tempo, a monitoring tool solution providers can use to carry out network performance assessments.

Calling Marketlink a "channel to the channel," Santiago said he hopes to grow Cymphonix's partner ranks to 500 solution providers, up from 50 now.

Cymphonix is now training Marketlink's sales force, which will act as an extension of the vendor's channel sales force to help recruit, train and work with partners in the field.

Available now, pricing for Bandwidth Composer 200 starts at $2,495. Bandwidth Tempo is priced at $495.
