Streamroot got its start in 2013 and specializes in WebRTC-based video content delivery network technologies.

The company's hybrid content delivery models help connected devices, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, set-top consoles and smart TVs, serve up premium content through a secure and private mesh delivery.

Monroe, La.-based CenturyLink said the acquisition helps the company stand apart from its competitors in terms of content delivery and edge compute services.

"Streamroot brings a data-driven approach to improving the user experience, particularly during peak internet traffic hours," said Bill Wohnoutka, vice president, global internet and content delivery services, CenturyLink. "This technology and the team that invented it are crucial to helping us enable high-quality viewing experiences, especially within hard-to-serve markets."

Streamroot CEO Pierre-Louis Theron said in a statement that the two companies share a vision to improve the user experience with rich media content through edge computing and data science. "We believe joining forces with CenturyLink will accelerate our ability to innovate for the benefit of our customers, internet users and network operators across the globe," Theron said.

The second-largest U.S.-based communications provider behind competitor Comcast, CenturyLink has spent the past several years transitioning from a telecom carrier to a networking service provider. The company has recently turned its focus to strategic IT services, such as hybrid networking and cloud services.
