NAI Readies Security Device

The McAfee IntruShield 1200 expands the intrusion-prevention product line that Santa Clara, Calif.-based Network Associates acquired in May with its purchase of IntruVert Networks.

The device has the same architecture as the other McAfee IntruShield appliances but has a form factor and price point suited for branch offices and midsize companies of 500 or more users, said Raj Dhingra, vice president of product management and marketing at McAfee Network Security Technologies, a business unit of Network Associates.

Like the other McAfee IntruShield devices, the 1200 is a purpose-built appliance that combines signature, anomaly and denial-of-service detection techniques to protect networks from both known and unknown attacks. The 1200 has two detection ports and features 100-Mbps throughput. The device is slated for availability Aug. 15 and is priced at $10,995.

Network Associates partners who are certified to sell the product will be able to offer a solution that bundles it with McAfee IntruShield Manager System software, said Katherine Brocklehurst, senior director of channel and business development at Network Associates. The bundled solution costs $15,000.

Network Associates is making a big push into the intrusion-prevention arena. In addition to IntruVert, the company earlier this year bought Entercept Security Technologies, a host-based intrusion-detection software vendor.

Sean Stenovitch, president of solution provider Future Com, North Richland Hills, Texas, said he likes the way Network Associates is reaching out to partners who are willing to step up to the plate to sell the new product line. "The biggest concern we have is to make sure they [Network Associates] get IntruVert and Entercept on the right path in terms of being best-of-breed [products]."
