Netasyst Sniffs Out Problems

Netasyst Network Analyzer is a protocol analyzer designed to help businesses with 100 to 500 employees troubleshoot, secure and optimize their networks, said Steve Finegan, product launch manager at Sniffer Technologies, Santa Clara, Calif. It supports 10/100 LAN and 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networks.

For example, Netasyst helps an administrator identify whether the network, application or server is at fault when there's a performance problem and helps locate misconfigured devices such as routers, Finegan said.

>> Netasyst is suited for SMBs that don't need the full version of the Sniffer product suite.

The software can optimize network resources by spotting nonbusiness uses, poor server response, and underused or overused links, he said. On the security front, Netasyst can ensure firewalls are configured correctly and can find infected hosts and servers.

An optional piece of add-on software called Expert Analysis mimics a network administrator's train of thought to pinpoint root causes of network problems and come up with possible solutions, Finegan said.

Brian Cosker-Swerske, CTO of Evigi Technologies, a Las Vegas-based solution provider, said his clients have responded positively to Netasyst demonstrations.

"This is giving them the network visibility that they need," Cosker-Swerske said.

Businesses want to minimize downtime and Netasyst helps do that by enabling administrators to locate problems, he said.

Netasyst is a "perfect fit" for small to midsize businesses that can't afford the full version of the Sniffer product suite, said Rodney Newton, systems engineer at Future Com, a solution provider based in North Richland Hills, Texas.

"Netasyst has all the Ethernet decodes that one would need to troubleshoot their network, and they aren't paying for all of the other decodes that come with the other products that they don't need," Newton said.

Netasyst to support either 10/100 LAN or 802.11 networks costs $1,395. With the addition of Expert Analysis, it costs $3,295.

To support both 10/100 LAN and 802.11, Netasyst is priced at $2,790, and with Expert Analysis, it's $6,590.
