Nemx Software Upgrade Sharpens Spam Detection

Available to channel partners now, the new version, Power Tools 4.2, is designed for Microsoft Exchange Server.

Nemx President John Young said Power Tools 4.2 eliminates "false positives" by measuring the frequency and destination of e-mail that an organization sends and setting up a list of friendly domains. Unlike white-listing technologies that require IT administrators to create lists of legitimate domains manually, the friendly domain approach intuitively determines a list by itself over time.

"Spammers are always going to find new ways of getting around existing systems, so organizations require tools that offer a multitiered approach to dealing with spam," Young said. "The addition of friendly domain functionality to Power Tools provides administrators with a powerful tool for dealing with spam."

Power Tools 4.2 incorporates server-based user rules that enable organizations to push triggered e-mail to specific folders on the network, shifting the decision-making process from the network level to the desktop level. Such a feature lets end users decide which e-mail is important, and over time, the Power Tools 4.2 engine incorporates those parameters into its list of friendly domains.

The software also incorporates an improved quarantine mechanism. Using new filtering, categorizing, viewing and sorting features, network administrators can log and delete quarantined messages in a matter of seconds.

Young added that Power Tools 4.2's friendly domain functionality will be integrated with existing Power Tools features, including Concept Manager, a technique that uses thesaurus-matching to monitor and block spam based on the entire concept of a message.

Power Tools 4.2 is priced at $999 and includes a 50-user license. A stripped-down Internet version that provides similar functionality in an MSP format also is available for $495.
