Blackpoint Cyber Names New CEO As Founder Moves To Board

‘From day one, my passion has been grounded in product design, strategy, cybersecurity response operations and engaging directly with our MSP partners,’ says Jon Murchison, founder, Executive Chairman and former CEO of Blackpoint Cyber in a statement. ‘This transition allows me to double down on those areas while continuing to shape our high-level strategy.’

Blackpoint Cyber has named Gagan Singh as the company’s new CEO, with founder and now former CEO Jon Murchison taking the newly created role of executive chairman.

The Denver-based managed detection and response company was founded in 2007 by Murchison, who has led it for 18 years. Murchison said Singh (pictured) is the leader Blackpoint needs as it enters a period of rapid international growth and acquisitions.

“From day one, my passion has been grounded in product design, strategy, cybersecurity response operations and engaging directly with our MSP partners,” said Murchison in a statement. “This transition allows me to double down on those areas while continuing to shape our high-level strategy.”

Singh’s background includes more than two years as COO and executive vice president at McAfee, during which he drove growth in the SMB and consumer segments and launched two new channels and four products in under 14 months, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also spent a year as chief product officer at NortonLifeLock, where he was accountable for $2 billion in subscription business renewals, upsell and cross-sell.

Muirchison said Singh’s years of experience will serve him well as he takes the helm of Blackpoint.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished as a team, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead with Gagan leading the way. Gagan’s experience, values, dedication to our MSP partners, and focus on execution are exactly what we need to take Blackpoint to the next level,” Murchison said in a statement.

Singh has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from UC Berkley, an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University, according to his LinkedIn account. Singh described Blackpoint as a disrupter in the cybersecurity space.

“Blackpoint Cyber is one of those rare companies which has truly disrupted the cybersecurity industry, and I’m honored to be its next CEO,” said Singh in a statement. “Jon has done an incredible job leading the company from vision to execution, building a platform and a team that truly redefines cybersecurity for the MSP and midmarket space. I look forward to working closely with the executive leadership team, Jon and the entire board as we continue to scale, innovate and protect those who need it most.”

Blackpoint raised $190 million in funding in June 2023 from Bain Capital Tech Opportunities and Accel. Three members of the company’s board work for Bain Capital and two for Accel.

Prior to that 2023 investment, Blackpoint had raised $26 million in private investments.

The company was founded by U.S. Department of Defense cybersecurity experts, some of whom previously worked at the National Security Agency.
