"Cybercriminals aren't taking it easy, so we continue to work hard to help make sure our customers are well protected from a variety of online threats," Comcast's Senior Director of Security and Privacy Jay Opperman wrote in a blog Thursday introducing the new service.

"We're among the very first ISPs in the U.S. to take this kind of proactive approach to help protect customers online. Let us know what you think and share your ideas about how we can keep improving Internet security."

Comcast's high-speed Internet customers already have access to free Internet security software from Santa Clara, Calif.-based McAfee.

The new proactive security alerts are sent to Comcast customers who are suspected of having infected PCs. The alert appears in a Web browser and directs the customer to Comcast antivirus specialists who "diagnose the problem and take steps to fix it," according to the ISP.
