Fortinet Launches Enterprise UTM Appliances

One of Fortinet's new releases, the FortiGate 3950B, targets complex enterprise environments by offering 120 Gbps of low-latency firewall inspection performance designed for high-speed data centers and extensive corporate network perimeters.

In addition, the Sunnyvale-based company is launching FortiGate-3951B appliance, which includes internal storage and can scale up to 100 Gbps of firewall performance.

Executives said that the releases offer more than standard firewalls in light of their enhanced content-aware security functions aimed at Web application threats.

"We call our appliances multi-threat appliances," said Chris Simmons, Fortinet director of product strategy. "We don’t want to be pigeonholed. The FortiGate is a much more than a simple firewall with IPS."

Altogether, both FortiGate appliances set themselves apart by featuring a modular form factor while integrating a broad array of network and content security services, including threat identification, prevention and policy enforcement capabilities, executives said.

Simmons said that what also sets these releases apart is their ability to scale upwards, giving channel partners an instant leg up by offering demonstrable ROI.

"We're doing quite a few things. By consolidating the security, by providing them a platform that is scalable and extensive, we're giving them the ability to scale over time," Simmons said. "You don’t have to buy something today that you won't use until three years from now."

Fortinet executives said that the new releases offer increased flexibility and high-end network performance due to integrated WAN optimization and enhanced firewall and IPS technologies. In addition, both appliances can be deployed to include any combination of IPSec/SSL VPN, antivirus/anti-malware, Web filtering and antispam, data loss prevention, and voice security services, determined by the customer.

The new products also provide granular application protection, allowing secure connections, blocking unsafe communications and "intercepting at the first sign of trouble," Simmons said.

"Firewall technology has evolved and is evolving. This is a multi-threat security platform with antivirus, IPS, antivirus, Web filtering. We're giving our customers a menu of security services," he added.

Simmons said that the releases can also be utilized by MSPs to provide managed services in a cloud-based scenario, as well as wrap professional services, such as policy management and assessment services, around the devices.

"It is so modular, it has to be specified correctly to achieve customer success. There's a great opportunity for the channel partner to wrap professional services around the offering," Simmons said.

Both the FortiGate 3950B and 3951B are available today.
