ESET Rebrands and Updates Security Offerings

“Content filtering is becoming an increasingly important area of security,” said Chen. “More modern threats come through the Internet as the primary attack vector. We provide comprehensive device control features so that customers can have very good control over how data is accessed from physical and network ports.”

Chen claims that ESET has millions of users worldwide, and a lot of them "are self-identified as 'geeks.'" While the company has a very strong retail business at the consumer level, its business offerings are sold through the channel.

“Over the past three years, we’ve watched ESET move beyond SMB, adding things like device control and central management,” said Peter Streips, president of Network Security Group, Inc., a Charlestown, Mass.-based partner. “We’ve been getting a lot of customer interest.”

ESET has established a reputation for its very light footprint while protecting against known and zero day attacks. The technology uses heuristics as well as generic signatures that help to quickly identify variants of malware targeting physical machines, virtual machines and a full range of operating systems.

New features include a web dashboard, role-based management and 25 new report templates, which brings the total number of templates to 70. Other enhancements include plug-ins to support third-party SIEM integration.

The Antivirus point product includes protection against a full range of malware and device control features, which enable administrators to define types of devices that can be plugged into the endpoint, letting them know what actions should be taken when they are connected. According to Chen, “For example, you can have the device automatically scanned, based on your predefined policies. You can also blacklist and whitelist, as well as specify that different device characteristics be captured.”

A major overhaul of the Host Intrusion Prevention module allows administrators to write rules on how applications can access or modify files, impact other running processes and alter specific registries.

Other highlights include Update Rollback, Multiple Log Formats, RSA Envision Support and Microsoft NAP Support. A Presentation Mode feature defers nonessential scheduled tasks as well as non-critical notifications in order to eliminate popup interruptions. This feature can be switched off either manually, by pre-set time or by departure from presentation mode.

The Endpoint Security product has all of the above plus web filtering and content filtering.

Both products are sold with standard remote management.
