Mimecast has acquired data migration technology provider Simply Migrate to help customers and prospects move to the cloud more quickly, reliably and inexpensively.

The Lexington, Mass.-based email security vendor said Tuesday that the acquisition of London-based Simply Migrate will help reduce the cost and complexity associated with legacy data migration. This is one of the leading obstacles preventing businesses from moving to modern cloud-based archiving offerings such as Mimecast, according to the company.

"The technology Simply Migrate offers is engineered to provide end-to-end migration into the Mimecast Cloud Archive, helping to cut costs and operational complexity while achieving a superior result with more flexible access to data, case management, supervision and more," Peter Bauer, Mimecast CEO, said in a statement.

Mimecast's stock was up less than 1 percent to $34.84 Tuesday morning. Simply Migrate was founded in 2014 and employs five people, according to LinkedIn. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Mimecast executives weren’t immediately available for additional comment.

Bauer said that legacy archiving systems are outdated and unable to handle the growth and ever-changing demands of a modern enterprise. Specifically, Bauer said many organizations struggle with ballooning email storage volumes, other types of unstructured data, and the cost and management burden associated with storing it on-premises.

The deal boosts Mimecast's migration capabilities by adding deep experience around helping organizations get out managing expensive, unreliable legacy archives. Once that's taken care of, businesses can move to a next-generation data protection strategy in the Mimecast cloud, according to the company.

The Mimecast cloud can help organizations reduce costs, safeguard their intellectual property, preserve institutional memory, accelerate e-discovery, and achieve compliance, according to the company. The Mimecast Cloud Archive was recently named named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Information Archiving for the fourth year in a row, according to the company.

Simply Migrate said on its website that it adds value around Mimecast data reporting and migrations by providing itemized reporting, filtering options that help businesses migrate only the data they really need, helping companies understand what they currently have in their Mimecast data, and chain of custody information that ensures for compliance reasons that businesses know what's been migrated.

Other notable technology supported by Simply Migrate includes OneDrive, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Sharepoint, Google Drive, Box, and Dropbox, according to the company's website. Simply Migrate works with cloud platform providers, VARs, and consultancy and professional services teams, the company said.

This is Mimecast's fourth acquisition since being founded 16 years ago, according to CrunchBase. The company kicked things off in November 2016 with its purchase of Costa Mesa, Calif.-based email and internet security provider iSheriff.

In July 2018, Mimecast announced two acquisition, buying Bethesda, Md.-based cybersecurity training startup Ataata to help customers mitigate risk and reduce employee security errors, as well as security software developer Solebit for $88 million to boost its protection capabilities against advanced cyberattacks, zero-day threats and malware.
