Websense Tackled 'Three Cyberattacks Per Second' In 2014

Websense, which was acquired by Raytheon for $1.9 billion this week, said it spent the last year treating an average of three attacks per second. Websense’s Charles Renert told CRNtv that Websense tackled a total of 4 billion attacks in 2014 alone.
Renert said the ’concept of malware as a service’ has been particularly harmful to companies.
’Conducting an attack to steal data is a very complicated thing, and the vast majority of attackers do not have the resources to actually create those attacks. So [it's] the idea of reusing different aspects of the attack -- be it the malware binaries that are installed, [or] exploit kits that deliver the payloads, or command and control infrastructure,’ Renert said.
Those reused attacks are a perverse form of threat recycling common in cybercrime, which Renert said makes security firms’ jobs easier.
’Almost everything new has some flavor of old to it. What you want to build is a set of analytics that can identify the root, the essence of what an attack technique is, so that you can be resistant to variation,’ said Renert.
Renert said having an adaptive security system in place is also key, as threats evolve so rapidly.
