When Hewlett-Packard proposed the merger with Compaq, HP executives were seeking a leg up in the storage space. One reason: Compaq has gained and extended market leadership over storage rival EMC with 2.6 percent more market share. Compaq estimates it has a "$630 million revenue delta" annually over EMC, Lewis told financial analysts earlier this year. And Lewis, who succeeded Howard Elias in the post, pointed to a Morgan Stanley study that predicts the storage space will grow by 12 percent in 2002.
