Veritas Adds Intelligence To Cisco Switches, Brocade To Follow
The Veritas relationship with Cisco means solution providers and their customers will be able to move storage intelligence from the host or storage device to the switch to improve the heterogeneous management of such storage, said Michael Sotnick, vice president of Veritas' partner sales.
The software, the Veritas Storage Foundation for Networks, is a storage virtualization application that enables policy and performance management, storage provisioning and zoning, all across heterogeneous storage networks.
Veritas, Mountain View, Calif., is the first to take heterogeneous storage management software to the network, Sotnick said. Other solutions on the market, such as Hewlett-Packard's move to embed technology from its Rhapsody acquisition onto Brocade switches, are still tethered to specific platform vendors, he said.
Instead, said Sotnick, the philosophical underpinnings of Veritas in the storage space are the same openness and heterogeneity it brings to the networked storage market. "Our news is that our software intelligence works irrespective of host or storage platform," he said.
The company is also planning to embed the software in Brocade switches as well, and has already demonstrated such a solution, said Arya Barirani, director of strategic partner marketing at Veritas. The Brocade version is expected to be available next year, he said.
