HCL will use its Business Service Management process to centralize and standardize Xerox's data center infrastructure.

HCL will manage data center hosting and migration for Xerox's information management operations, which includes virtualization, consolidation and storage architecture services across North America and Europe.

The deal covers midrange services, business continuity and disaster recovery for Xerox's information management operations. In addition, HCL will provide architecture and consulting services for new technology and system design, adoption and life-cycle improvement.

"Data center environments are the heart of our business operations and we look to partner with companies that can manage our centers and take them to the next level," said John McDermott, CIO of Xerox, in a statement.

In November 2008, the two companies formed an alliance in which HCL became a systems integrator for Xerox's managed print services. The companies integrated Xerox Office Services and systems with HCL's desktop management and infrastructure expertise to help enterprises gain control of printing, copying and other document-related costs.

HCL also has a 25-year relationship with Microsoft. In April 2008, the companies created a joint Centre of Excellence for development of vertical-specific customized solution frameworks for India. The reported $170 million contract also included a launch of what the companies said were the world's lowest-cost Windows OS-enabled laptops.

The Indian IT firm also has partnerships with SAP and Oracle. Currently HCL manages more than 800,000 mission-critical systems and supports 500,000 business users.
