Dell Acquires Storage Vendor Exanet

NAS

The Israeli business daily publication Globes reported on Monday that Dell has acquired Exanet for $12 million.

New York-based Exanet, which also has an R&D center in Israel, is a developer of clustered NAS technology. The company's appliances allow NAS to scale as more appliances are added, and can sit in front of other vendors' storage capacity.

Exanet went into receivership in January after it informed employees in December that it could not repay a $10 million loan, Globes reported.

Exanet is the third storage acquisition for Dell, a company which has made few acquisitions.

The company in early 2008 acquired EqualLogic, then one of the leading developers of iSCSI storage appliances. That acquisition, which happened at about the time Dell made its first serious attempt to develop a channel program, gave Dell a strong base of solution providers.

Prior to that, Dell in 1999 acquired storage technology startup Convergenet. That was a learning lesson for Dell, which was never able to capitalize on the technology it acquired.

Dell's biggest acquisition to date was that of professional services provider Perot Systems late last year.
