Xiotech Partners With Symantec, Dell On Scalable NAS

Xiotech, of Eden Prairie, Minn., introduced the solution at the Symantec Vision conference, which was held in Las Vegas this week.

The ISE is a self-contained, sealed storage module complete with hard drives; redundant storage controllers with local RAID, cache, and drive management software; redundant power and cooling; and battery backup.

It can be used as part of Xiotech’s Emprise series of arrays, as a stand-alone storage device, and as back-end storage to other vendors’ storage virtualization appliances such as IBM’s SVC, Hitachi Data Systems’ UPC, or NetApp’s V-series.

Now, when combined with Symantec’s FileStore software, the ISE can also be used as a high-performance, scalable NAS appliance, said Brian Reagan, senior vice president of marketing at Xiotech.

Symantec FileStore is a file serving software which offers data management and protection in traditional or cloud storage environments. It includes Symantec’s anti-virus, backup/recovery, archive, and dynamic storage tiering and snapshot technologies.

The software is run on a couple of 1U Dell PowerEdge 610 rack mount servers which serve as redundant controllers for the NAS bundle.

While solution providers can put together their own combination of hardware and software to build a NAS, other channel partners are looking for bundled kits as they start targeting customers’ increasingly virtualized IT environments, Reagan said.

“We’re leading with the turnkey package, but offering flexibility to our partners who want to build a broader solution,” he said.

The bundle, which will be available in a standard edition or an enterprise edition depending on which version of the FileStore software is chose, is expected to start shipping in May, Reagan said.

Exact pricing has yet to be determined, but Reagan said he expects starting price with the software, two servers, and one 8-TB ISE storage brick to list in the low $50,000 range.
