Dropbox To Discontinue Public Folders, Offers iOS Users Camera Uploads

Current users of Public folders can continue to use the feature, but new Dropbox users will have to use links starting Aug. 1, the company said.

“This new sharing mechanism is a more generalized, scalable way to support many of the same use cases as the Public folder,” Dropbox said in statement on its Web site.

Also Friday, Dropbox updated its iOS iPhone app to allow uploads of photos, documents and videos from the iPhone's camera. The updated app, version 1.5, is now available in the App Store.

The new version allows automatic uploading of photos and videos using Wi-Fi or a cellular data plan. Users can earn up to 3 GB of extra free space for uploading photos automatically.

Dropbox has made the feature available in beta form for Android since February.
