Dell Leverages RainStor Database To Expand Its Big Data Lineup
The move expands Dell's portfolio of data storage, management, warehousing and analytics products geared toward Big Data applications, the company said.
Big Data Retention can serve as a front-end repository for analytics systems with large datasets, as a back-end data repository, a standalone repository or as an analytics platform coupled with the Hadoop platform, according to the company.

It can provide an average data compression ratio of up to 40:1 and frees up disk space by approximately 97 percent, Dell said.
On the Big Data front, Dell already markets its Dell Cloudera management platform, combining the Cloudera distribution of Hadoop with the company's PowerEdge C- and R- series servers, Force 10 networks and Dell Crowbar deployment tools.
"Not only are the volumes of data growing – so is its value to the organization," said Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager of Dell Enterprise Storage, in a statement. Businesses need to cost-effectively capture and store that data in order to realize its value, he said. "The key is having the right data management solution to fluidly move data, tier it, dedupe it, protect it and archive it. To us, that means your data is fluid."
The system is currently available. Dell and RainStor did not disclose the terms of their deal under which Dell is reselling the RainStor technology.
Last month Dell said it was bundling Pentaho's analytics and data integration software with its Hadoop package.
