VMware has struck a deal to acquire Wavefront, a big data startup that develops a real-time analytics platform that businesses use to monitor and manage the performance of their IT systems.
"VMware set the standard for monitoring virtual environments with VMware vRealize Operations platform, and we will set the standard for cross-cloud and modern application monitoring with Wavefront," said Ajay Singh, senior vice president and general manager of VMware's Cloud Management Business Unit, in a statement. "It delivers a radically new scope and scale of metrics monitoring and analytics to help developers improve the performance, availability and customer experience of their digital services. When combined with the vRealize product portfolio, digital enterprises will gain a complete view from network through infrastructure to applications."
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Wavefront, named in CRN's 10 Coolest Big Data Startups of 2016, was founded in 2012. In April 2016, Wavefront hired former Actuate CEO Pete Cittadini as its new CEO.
Wavefront's technology will become part of VMware's Software-as-a-Service product portfolio. The vendor plans to use the startup to accelerate the development of VMware Cross-Cloud Services to help manage and monitor modern applications and their associated infrastructure across clouds, according to a statement.
Wavefront provides metrics monitoring to optimize clouds and modern applications by delivering operational insights using millions of data points per second in real-time. VMware said Wavefront's metric monitoring for applications will complement its vRealize Operations platform for monitoring, troubleshooting and capacity planning across virtual environments. Wavefront will also complement VMware's vRealize Network Insight and vRealize Log Insight products.
"I'm excited about Wavefront joining VMware upon the close of the deal," said Cittadini, in a statement. "Today, Wavefront delivers the ultimate streaming metrics monitoring to digital enterprises changing the way they deliver and instrument their clouds and modern applications. I look forward to delivering Wavefront's innovations to more customers, more extensively, as part of the vRealize portfolio of industry-leading multi-cloud management products."
The acquisition is expected to close during the second quarter of 2017.
