VMware Brings Mobility, Cloud To Public Sector

Mobility and cloud computing have been major areas of growth in IT for the past few years, but now VMware is looking to cut through government red tape to bring the technologies to the public sector.

Lynn Martin, vice president of public sector at VMware, said the company is leveraging its ’three pillars’ in the public sector space: end-user computing, software-defined data center, and cloud computing.

Martin said government employees are increasingly asking their employers to embrace the BYOD movement. Martin said customers want to ’get data anywhere, anytime they need it, in a secure fashion.’

The biggest challenge around mobility is bringing applications to devices in a secure fashion. Martin said VMware is leveraging its Airwatch technology to implement best practices, particularly in areas of the government with young adults who expect BYOD in company culture.

VMware recently announced a government cloud offering, vCloud Government Service, which meetings all FedRAMP security standards.

Martin said VMware’s service is an opportunity to transition to the cloud without any ’heavy lifting.’

’The nice thing about the VMware offering is that it allows you to move workloads in a nondisruptive manner,’ said Martin.
