Silence Is Golden For Antec Supply Line
Test Center engineers recently examined Antec&'s Phantom 350, an unusual 350-watt PC power supply that runs completely silent because it has no cooling fan; it cools itself using heatsinks instead. Certainly, 350 watts is enough for most systems but not for high-end media centers and systems with lots of added peripherals. That&'s where the newest power supply in Antec&'s line, the Phantom 500, comes in.
Evidently, 350 watts is about as much as a power supply can produce without a fan, because the Phantom 500 features a hybrid design that combines heatsinks and a cooling fan. The 500-watt, ATX-style power supply operates in complete silence without the fan running until its internal temperature reaches a certain level. Specially designed internal heatsinks and a chassis heatsink dissipate heat while the fan is idle. Solution providers can set the temperature at which the fan turns on. When the power supply reaches that threshold, the fan kicks in.
The Phantom 500&'s unique circuitry provides at least 85 percent efficiency at full load, which helps save energy and reduce heat. It has dedicated output circuits for each voltage along with voltage-feedback circuitry to ensure system stability.
The power supply also features over-temperature, over-voltage, over-current, over-power, short-circuit and under-voltage protection.
The Phantom 500 is ATX12V v2.01-compliant, so it&'s compatible with all the latest and greatest motherboards. An adapter is included for 20-pin backward compatibility with older motherboards.
Well-suited for high-end systems, the Phantom 500 includes four serial ATA power connectors and a PCI Express graphics card connector for high-end graphics cards. Its uniqueness comes at a price: The Phantom 500 lists for $199.
