Review: Connecting With Global Cache

Another common challenge is that integrators may want to add off-the-shelf devices to a proprietary automation network without having to purchase them from the automation vendor or pay high costs for compatible products. Such problems are the bane of integrators, but Jacksonville, Ore.-based Global Cach hopes to simplify the challenge.

Global Cach's GC-100 Home Network Adapters are IP-enabler boxes that connect devices that use IR, serial or relay contact closure signals to an Ethernet network. The adapters allow entertainment products, security systems, lighting control, HVAC systems and other products that have historically functioned independently to communicate with one another and be controlled from a common interface. Once connected to a network, they can be accessed and controlled from anywhere in a building or over the Internet.

Digital Connect Lab engineers tested the GC-100-12 adapter and found it to be an essential device for integrators. The GC-100-12 has a LAN connection, two serial ports, six IR connectors and three relay connections. Integrators can configure the IR connectors as either IR outputs or sensor inputs to control and receive data from a range of products. The relay connections can be used to turn on and off devices that require a lot of power, such as motors, relays or hot-tub pumps. Each relay connection includes a suppressor that protects it from excessive voltage.

The adapter sends data commands over serial, and over TCP/IP Port 4998 for infrared, sensor and relay. An embedded Web server allows integrators or users to update settings and configure ports via Web pages. Step-by-step instructions are included, but experience with integration helps.

The adapters open up a range of new opportunities for integrators in homes and small businesses. For example, instead of purchasing a home theater package of several products and an expensive controller from a single vendor, integrators can mix and match lights, projector, screen, curtain control and other products from numerous vendors and control them through the Home Network Adapter.

The adapter also increases the range from which devices can be controlled. IR products can be accessed from a remote control a few feet away, but once connected to an IP network via the GC-100-12, the devices can be controlled from anywhere in the home.

In addition, Global Cach's products can mean significant price savings. Most automation packages require expensive, proprietary remote controls or touch panels to control entertainment products, lights and other devices. Instead, integrators can connect such devices to a network with the GC-100-12 and offer a wireless Pocket PC or off-the-shelf touch panel for control. For an entertainment room, instead of purchasing an expensive media server with numerous ports, an integrator could instead install a less expensive server with fewer ports and use the ports on the GC-100-12 to connect devices. Many automation systems for homes and businesses also require each room to have an expensive media controller. Instead, integrators can install a single controller for the entire building and use a GC-100-12 to connect devices in each room.

Global Cach is developing modules that will slip into bays on the Network Adapters to further enhance their capabilities. The GC-100-12 has two open bays, and the modules will allow integrators to add features such as wireless access, embedded software or additional IR or serial ports.

Several models of the Network Adapter are available, including the six-inch GC-100-6 with one serial and three IR or relay ports ($149.95), the 12-inch GC-100-12 ($299.95) and the 18-inch GC-100-18 ($369.95 or $399.95 with a rack mount). The products are supported by numerous automation packages.
