Any Port In A Storm: Newset KVM Switches Make The Connection

Aten Altusen KM0432 Matrix

The new Altusen KM0432 Matrix KVM from Aten is a four-console, 32-port unit. In a high-end configuration, up to 4,096 computers can be controlled from one console by daisy-chaining multiple KM0432s together while cascading multiple eight- or 16-port KVM switches off each KMO432 KVM. The unit costs $3,995. The Matrix KVM has 32 LEDs on the front panel that indicate the status of connected PCs or servers. A power socket and switch, a firmware upgrade port, two daisy-chain ports (chain in and chain out), four console ports and 32 CPU ports for connection to remote PCs or servers are located on the back of the unit.

The daisy-chain ports connect multiple KVM units together. KVMs are typically linked in a cascading manner, but this method causes the main KVM to lose the use of one CPU port for each added switch. By equipping the Matrix KVM unit with daisy-chain ports, none of the CPU ports are ever lost to cascading. In addition to the KVM unit, at least one console module is needed. A console module connects a keyboard, mouse and monitor to an Ethernet cable, which connects to the KVM unit from as far away as 500 feet. Console modules are available in PS/2, USB, Mac or Sun Microsystems versions.

In a single-stage installation, one or more console modules are connected to a single Matrix KVM unit via Ethernet cable, and up to 32 PCs or servers connect to the KVM CPU ports. Small CPU modules connect PCs or servers to the Ethernet cables that run to the switch.

The Aten Six-Star VAR Program was recently revamped and offers a generous $5,000 MDF sign-up bonus as well as 5 percent co-op. Aten is now offering partners double co-op for the first three months on all qualifying purchases. Volume incentive rebates are available and vary based on sales volume. Integrators receive greatly discounted prices on demonstration and evaluation units. Average margins are 30 percent to 40 percent and are based on product, market and volume.

Avocent DSR1021 KVM

Avocent's DSR1021 KVM switch is an eight-port unit capable of controlling eight target devices such as servers, serial devices and other peripherals. The DSR1021 KVM-over-IP solution is designed for use in remote and branch offices. The switch lets administrators troubleshoot, reboot or cycle servers and serial devices from any location. Audit logs add an additional layer above and beyond a corporate network's security. Standard Ethernet cabling connects the eight ports to the target devices using dongle connectors called DSRIQ modules, which are available in PS/2, Sun Microsystems and USB versions. The DSR1021 KVM switch costs $1,750.

The switch also features LAN, setup, modem and SPC ports along with local ports for the direct connection of a keyboard, mouse and monitor. The LAN port connects the DSR1021 to the Internet and allows administrators to access the switch remotely. The setup port is used to set the initial configuration. The modem port should be connected to a modem with its own dedicated phone line for redundancy. This redundancy allows administrators to access the DSR1021 even if a company's main T1 LAN is offline. The SPC port connects to an optional power strip with eight AC outlets that can be toggled on and off.

Avocent's client software, DSView, is required for remote management and can be used on any target device connected to the switch. The DSView software lets administrators manage remote servers and VT100 network devices via a Web-based interface from anywhere there is Internet access. The software allows administrators to assign individual user rights to restrict PC access.

Avocent's Take Command channel program offers Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. Partners qualify based on sales volume and demonstrated product expertise. Average reseller margins are around 15 percent. Program benefits include aggressive base discounts, co-op marketing funds, access to both an inside and outside sales and engineering force, a comprehensive training program, pre- and post-sales support and lead sharing. Monthly training classes are given at Avocent's headquarters, and Web-based training is available 24x7. CHANNEL PROGRAM SNAPSHOTS
