Certance's LTO A Storage Standout

The Ultrium 3's native storage capacity is 400 Gbytes uncompressed and 800 Gbytes compressed. Although Super Advanced Intelligent Tape (SAIT) drives have the advantage of offering larger-capacity media, data-transfer rates for Certance's Ultrium 3 are much faster.

The LTO3 drive includes a media shield, which calculates the cost of media over time and can also minimize damage to tape-based media from tape-killers such as heat, debris and physical friction. The LTO3 offers two separate storage compartments to minimize the effects of these factors. A bottom compartment contains the printed circuit board (PCB) and the cooling fans to keep heat and debris away from the tape media itself. A second compartment is where the tape is written and read. Low friction rollers minimize friction on the tape to protect against deterioration.

The Ultrium 3 also offers advanced tracking capabilities to maintain stability when the unit is outside a data-center environment. These advanced tracking capabilities in the tape compartment of the drive are able to ensure the tape is tracking correctly, minimize shock, vibration and friction, and quickly read data. A smart verify feature addresses total data integrity in four different places on the tape drive. Most competitors only verify data in two places, and in some cases, this can mean corrupted data is stored on the tape media. Using the LTO3 technology, the Ultrium checks the data in two additional places to confirm accuracy. By adding these two extra checkpoints, the drive can perform a hardware-based verification pass concurrently with the data being written to tape.

The drive ships with a fully licensed retail version of the workgroup edition of BakBone NetVault software, valued at $1,100. The drive is compatible with backup software from all major vendors. The Ultrium 3 is covered by a three-year warranty, and the React advanced product replacement program will replace faulty hardware in less than 48 hours.
