Getting Smart With SmartPower 2.0

Regardless of how a system will be priced, system builders should use a high-quality power supply because it&s an easy way to build a reliable computer. Antec&s new SmartPower 2.0 is ideal for powering high-end systems. A 500-watt model is priced at $89; a 350-watt version costs $59.

SmartPower 2.0 is an ATX12V v2.0-compliant power supply featuring dual 12-volt rails; for stability, one rail powers the motherboard and peripherals while the other rail powers the processor. The ATX12V v2.0 compliance means SmartPower 2.0 consumes up to 25 percent less power than standard 500-watt power supplies.

The unit comes with four serial ATA connectors for compatibility with the latest hard drives, along with a PCI Express graphics card connector. The 24-pin motherboard connector has a removable 4-pin section for backward compatibility.

SmartPower 2.0 uses a unique 80-millimeter dual-fan design that runs nearly silent. One fan is flush with the power supply&s exterior vent while the other is flush with its interior side. The thermally regulated interior fan turns on when the power supply is powered up; the exterior fan turns on to provide additional cooling only when the unit reaches a specific temperature.

SmartPower 2.0 comes with Antec&s advanced cable management system, whereby the peripheral leads plug into the power supply using special connectors. System builders can use only the cables they need and leave out the ones they don&t; this reduces clutter inside the case while improving airflow at the same time. Connectors are gold-plated for superior conductivity and resistance to oxidation.

The power supply offers industrial-grade protection against short circuits, overloads, low voltages and excessive voltages. It also meets international safety approvals and is backed by a three-year warranty.
